2019 Swimming Canterbury West Coast Awards

Swimming Canterbury West Coast held their Annual Awards on Friday 19th October 2019.

The evening celebrated the achievements and efforts of our region’s swimmers, coaches, officials and volunteers during the 2018-2019 season, and included awards for Swimmer and Para Swimmer of the Year, Emerging Swimmer, Coach of the Year, Outstanding Contribution and Achievement, recognition for our current International Representatives and SCWC Service, Honours and Life Member Award recipients, as well as the special Swimming New Zealand presentations to numbered athletes of years gone by, and SNZ Service Awards recipients.

Swimming Canterbury West Coast welcomes two new Life Members to its ranks in 2019, with the awarding of Life Member to Lesley Huckins and Clive Power. Both Lesley and Clive have, and continue to dedicate a huge part of their lives to swimming in our region and these awards were truly well-deserved- huge congratulations to you both.

It was also fantastic to have one of our region's Swimming New Zealand numbered athletes from year’s gone by, Lydia O'Loughlin (nee Lipscombe). Lydia was a member of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta where she placed 11th in the 100m Backstroke at only 17 years of age. She represented NZ again at the 1998 Commowealth Games in Kuala Lumpur placing 7th in the 200m Backstroke. Andy Kent, Head of Participation for Swimming New Zealand made the trip to Christchurch to present Lydia with her Swimming New Zealand numbered athlete certificate.

The star of the evening was our wonderful guest speaker, Brad Smeele, twice Junior World Wake Boarding Champion and 2014 Trick of the Year winner with the worlds first double tantrum (back flip) to blind over a mega ramp. Unfortunately, just weeks later, Brad took a heavy crash attempting to land that same trick again, resulting in him breaking his neck, leaving him a quadriplegic.

Brad was a truly inspirational, moving and thought provoking speaker with an amazing story to tell. Thank you Brad for sharing your experiences and your truth with us all.

The evening was capped off with great food, beautiful trophies and even better company - a fantastic way to celebrate successes of the past and present in our amazing region.

Huge thanks to Ben Smith for his great work on the Powerpoint, and to Kim Berquist, our fabulous photographer.

You can check out the photos from the evening  here.

We hope that all who attended enjoyed the night as much as we did!
